Wildcats Album Cover

When your singer's a painter, the set builds itself.
Wildcats are a new trio out of New Orleans, but Scott Guion (vocals, guitar) and I go way back — this is the second album cover I've helped him make. The first was for his band Rigid, in the early '90s.
I won't pretend the inspiration came entirely from our own heads. A week or so before Scott and I met, I'd seen work by Szilveszter Makó, a Hungarian photographer who arranges his subjects and props flat on the ground and shoots from above — theatrical compositions with a painterly, constructed feel. It fit Scott's own work perfectly — absurd, surreal, and compelling. Scott painted a 12-by-12-foot mural, made to be laid on. The band climbed onto it, and we shot straight down.
More than a unique cover, we wanted one made completely in-camera — no AI filling in the vision. Creating a shot like this is nearly impossible working alone, so thanks to Todd and Melissa for helping make this shot a reality.
Color Palette
The colors in this shoot were fully inspired by Scott's painting. The original painting was much smaller – made for an album cover. Scott managed to pull together a 12 foot square painting in a day.
